hal -- if I stop hald (or log out of a Gnome session) I can control the

Something has changed. The KDE apps like amarok no longer crash. They
still output the same error messages, but it doesn't cause them to crash
anymore. The only major changes since I started this thread is I've
kept updating the distribution, and finally got the native NVIDIA
drivers working.

I can confirm this on an Asus G1S. I have to take exactly the same steps
to resurrect the Internet connection.
I also get the symptom that when the connection goes down, an iwlist
scan hangs for a few seconds, and then responds with the error
resource temporarily unavailable. Furthermore, an
out of pure evilness, I found out that most of the times (in my environment)
the clients survived a server reboot as long as they where at the login prompt.
I know this may not be 100% expected and that this neither may be the
intended way of doing things.
