I triaged the problem
It was caused by LC_CTYPE=fi_FI.UTF-8 when LANG=en_US.UTF-8. LC_CTYPE
was set in /etc/environment.
I am not familiar with LC_CTYPE, but I assume it deals with character
conversion somehow. This setting caused problems in Eclipse, which
opened files as ANSI instead of UTF-8
Arion (or any edgy users), can you reproduce this bug in Edgy Final?

7.04. I only used 7.04 for a week before upgrading to 7.10. Since then
the sleep function has worked perfectly. My last successful sleep
wake-up was 3 days ago.

For example, evince is opened, man find in terminal, press f or b
to turn pagedown or pageup, the error appears, not every page, but
sometimes, by chance of about 1 in 10. When press j to scroll down,
the display return to normal.
