I have the same device and noticed the same effect described by popey on
a fresh Hardy install (Xubuntu, but at the gdm screen.) Switching to the
console (Ctrl Alt F1) and back to X (Alt F7) solves the distortion,
although X is only showing the upper left hand 640x480 of an 800x600 GDM

server 8.04.1 amd64 did not install because the large-memory option was
not in lilo.conf.
Either put it there from start, or even better, provide a chance of
editing the generated lilo.conf during install before installing the

Thanks, that worked, now I can hibernate again. And the wireless network
still works fine after resume, so looks like ipw3945 can handle it.

I'm using kernel 2.6.24-21-generic, for which the virtualbox-ose modules
have not yet been compiled. When trying to use module-assistant I get
the same errors as the first poster (assembly-related messages). This
