I think the problem is with the ati device driver. If I manually edit
Xorg.conf to use the vesa driver isntead, I get to a login screen and
after that a working desktop. But if I change it back to the driver
ati the aforementioned symptom appears again.
Also, I can see that my Xorg.conf file is
I just installed the current intrepid-desktop-i386 on my Asus Eee 900.
To enable wireless, I had to comment blacklist ath5k and uncomment
blacklist ath_pci in /etc/modprobe.d/madwifi and reboot.
So far, I couldn't notice any wireless slowdowns compared to other
operating systems.

In general there's no way to know that Emacs will be running for a
particular user, and if one has to start it up, the delay is not
avoided. It's nice to use emacsclient if a server happens to be running,
but if it's not, then it's also nice if ALTERNATE_EDITOR is set to
something that starts up
By the way, the proof that there is demand for this functionality is the
popularity of Zile (of which I am the upstream maintainer). Zile does
have a niche on resource-constrained systems, but I would like to be
able to do away with it for most uses; however, for quick startup it
still beats Emacs
is the kernel module 'dm-mod' loaded? does the problem go away if you
'sudo modprobe dm-mod'?

you can report any ubuntu bug on launchpad, the ubuntu team doesn't have
the ressources to work on all those issues in a distribution specific

I'm seeing the same on a Medion Akoya E1210 (Intel Corporation Mobile
945GME video card). Perhaps it has something to do with this error?
