In Hardy is ufw already (ufw is a middleman between IPTABLES and user -
like Firestarter, but it's shell command tool) and with gufw (GUI -
Gnome ufw) it's really nice. I've tested it on 8.10 thought, but it
should be gufw for Hardy too (I've seen it with Polish edition 8.04.1 so
search for gufw
It seems to be an ALSA problem more than a TiMidity++ problem. I fixed it by
editing ~/.asoundcfg and commenting the uncommented line.
This also fixed a lot more problems involving ALSA.

Just to add that when I finally manage to quickly take out the dvd
from the drive, and push the eject button, it ejects the tray but
doesn't reinsert the tray of the device

Ever since kernel update 2.6.26-7-generic gstreamer0.10-tools has been
broken for me when attempting to read a DVD stream. It was working in
2.6.26-6-generic, but I think a recent update to the gstreamer0.10
package broke that as well.

My change didn't fix the issue. I'm not sure whether I just didn't add the
#include to enough places, or whether I got the assessment of the problem
wrong.

I fixed my network card in my x61t with the Vista drivers from intel.com

My evolution just duplicated 500 mails in a folder, by its own, while I
was dragging a message from inbox to another folder. Being able to
delete duplicate messages in a folder is really needed here. KMail was
able to do it for years already.
