I think this may just be an issue with your mixer settings. I myself
have a Dell Inspiron 1420 and although my soundcard is one revision
older than yours (and I'm also unsure of which codec you use), my built
in mic is working here.

Three commands in the shell:

update-rc.d -f darkstat remove
update-rc.d darkstat defaults 89
Now darkstat starts later in the boot process. This brings darkstat to
work, maybe because NetworkManager or another Prog is confusing darkstat

Finally I was able to do a backtrace, but only with the sudo command.
If I ran it as my regular user, it would exit before I could trace.
