I gave up on the onboard ati card and installed a nvidia one. That
didn't work either and I have since found that the problem probably is
with the x64 system. With a dedicated x64 kernel the video is fine. I
suppose that would also be the case with a fglrx driver but as the
nvidia card works better

either on the native one or the virtualbox one. On the native one, I can

Confirmed in Jaunty.
By default it seems that the sounds from the Ubuntu theme are missing
(nothing plays to start with), however selecting a custom sound, and
then disabling the login sound causes sound to be played every time,
regardless of if it's been disabled or not.

It seems that gnome-volume-control is started at some point previously.
(possibly by gnome-volume-control-applet)
killing the existing process (killall gnome-volume-control) allows it to
be run normally again.
