Thanks Daniel, disabling the timer-based scheduling (tsched=0) fixed it
for me!
From a PA perspective I had to manually do
- install vlc-plugin-pulse
- configure VLC sound output to Pulse audio output
- disabling the timer-based scheduling (tsched=0)
