Then it should be possible to get the kernel to assign these

I have pulled this patch back to the Intrepid kernel and have built some
test kernels. If you could test those kernels and report back here that
would be very helpful. These kernels are available at the URL below:

We have a potential patch for the iwl3945 side of this issue. I have
built some test kernels for both Intrepid and Jaunty with that patch
applied. If those of you who are affected could try those kernels and
report back here that would be helpful. These kernels are at the URLs

On Hardy (my day-to-day work install) I'm still using the script from
bug 173652, which gives 11 steps in 10% increments (0% - 100% inclusive)
by calling xbacklight -(dec|inc) 10. I like this particular setup and
find 20% increments (6 steps) too coarse and 5% increments (21 steps)
too fine.

As per the last comment this was triggered by the BIOS having
virtualisation support turned off (probabally as a result of a BIOS
update). Enabling this has fixed performance. Marking this Invalid as
this was a machine configuration issue.

For now, I've worked around the problem by simply turning this feature
off. It's no good to me at the moment anyway.
