I got my system back. It was also suffering from network being toasted (ipmasq
starts up and fences system). Restarting ipmasq after the interfaces are
provisioned (by hand) allows networking to work again. Network-Manager applet
is a piece of crap and ping not permitted msgs are caused by ip

Installed Xubuntu Intrepid just fine with the alternate CD because of the
low-performance laptop, running Zenwalk Linux now, for better performance.
The bug was caused if I was not connected to the internet during installation.

ordinary people to achieve the same thing, for whom manually editing
xorg.conf is a step too far.

The Help menu of the Transmission BitTorrent client does not include a
"Report a Problem" command for gathering data to file bugs. It seems

the new ati driver 9.3 and updates fix this at least for me works with
compiz enable but the default sound is still the hdmi i used asoundconf
set-default-card to set the one to default but still no help i have

(1) i was overly optimistic when I said that exiting the initramfs shell
immediately helped. It often requires a wait of 30-60 seconds to succeed.
(2) an added observation that could shed some light: the hard-disk activity led
lights up continously since 'booting' the grub select

Followed the automatic bug report tool - this is identified as potential
duplicate ticket - i really do not know whether it is same or different root
cause.

I've been under the impression that this bug report is due to the wireless
driver. I've been running wired for almost three weeks without a panic.
Running wireless - especially when it's busy - say having Ubuntu ISO on a
torrent - and I'd crash daily.
