There is no error output, the process just gives up. We can see an error
if we run via command line; the problem is due to lack of permissions.

Ugh? Which version of lintian do you use? Here on 2.2.10 (on Debian
unstable) this warning isn't shown, as Applications is a valid root
entry in the Debian menu.

After upgrading to 9.04 the problem still exists for me. I can download from
the Internet at 10MB/s but while copying large files from xp sharing the speed
was around 700KB/s

It's a Pidgin plugin, actually. So the bug should probably be
transferred to Pidgin. A similar bug was reported on Pidgin under
8.04, but the music player was VLC. That person is upgrading to 9.04
now, and will update his bug report.

Hi, just a follow up, to sort out and avoid misconceptions.
I came along finding users having the problem that places menu open with a
specific application, e.g. Totem, VLC, which wasn't expected, (especially after
a dist-upgrade).
Hence I think, this might be one reason for removing this
