The i386 architecture is perfectly compatible with an AMD system
(otherwise your system would not just work). So you don't need to
install the AMD64 version (unless you need to have 64 bits).

What I can see in these information can't explain the many problems

Nope, I meant prior to first attempt. The screenshot is taken upon fresh
boot. I can replicate it every time by booting, starting gnome-terminal,
then
ps ax | grep -i backends
always returns what was shown in the screenshot. I'll give the debug symbols
a shot tomorrow.

Hi I also have an issue to print via ECP/LPT0 on my HP LaserJet4 Plus - getting
error message on printer:
W2 Invalid Pers.
Here is what I checked:
BIOS:ECP is enabled
dsmesgonly one line associated with ECP:
