An easy workaround is to turn off the wireless card before shutdown. You
can do that using the hardware switch on the laptop or using the

Considering that I reported that issue with 8.04 (Hardy) and we are now at
the dawn of 9.10 (Karmic) I would have probably uninstalled Specto by now if

I forgot to mention I tried reinstalling Kubuntu with the latest daily
image each time, and I've done that at least five times. I have also
tried vesa and other drivers that are not proprietary but it doesn't
affect anything.

The only point is a power management issue when I switch from VT to X. If my
laptop is working without AC plugged in, my screen bright goes to the lowest
level.
I forgot to mention that worked with and without KMS.

start it. Looking at strace and kern.log showed that kvm did a chown:

I had this bug on karmic-alpha6, while doing an update. The crash
happened as the new software was being installed.

Actually I have given up on this issue, for all practical purposes. I
just installed 9.04 first, then did the online update with Update
Manager - which is advertised NOT to replace the legacy GRUB with GRUB
2. The procedure is described here:
