Here are my findings.

Dell Inspiron 1545. BCM4312. Karmic RC, managed to install and activate

For some reason, after a few updates and a bit of messing around with
usplash.conf, I have it running at 1024x768 without being all stretched.
Don't get me wrong, it is still blurred because it isn't the native
resolution. Still, it is half decent now.
The actual
Rick pointed out in an email to me that a similar program, xnee, is
doing the same thing. There seems to be a call to the X-window system
that's causing the problem in both programs.
I'm willing to pay for a solution. But I have no idea how I'd find
someone who'd be willing to work on it!

I have to say that I have had more flicker in the OS now that I have changed to

I killed the http process and update-manager went away. I this tried the
upgrade again and it got past this point and is installing now. It is
clear to me what went wrong because I got no feedback from update-
manager. If it was a networking problem, perhaps a timeout of some sort

i don't know if there are 2 bugs or 1 only in this topic...
but i think it has to do something with umlauts in the directory names.
my ubuntu cd-image is on desktop (finnish filename Työpöytä) and after moving
it to any other folder that does not contain umlauts, it works 100%
