I think I have found the one pdf that is actually responsible for
choking evince-thumbnailer (regardless wether with gksudo nautilus or
normal nautilus - but normal nautilus already had choked once on it and
afterwards it seems to know, that it has failed on that file and evince-
thumbnailer does

Got the same issue today (system hangs after /scripts/init-bottom)
Thanks to poster before, I was able to fix the issue.
My steps:
1) change recovery mode command line in GRUB from ro single to rw break=init
2) chroot /root /bin/bash
3) dhclient (to get IP/network configuration)
4) apt-get
There have been no install/upgrade bugs reported after checkbox 0.8.1,
so I'm marking this bug as fix released.

The same guidelines apply to menu items no matter what type of menu
they're in. For example, the use of icons in Nautilus's Open With
submenu should be exactly the same regardless of whether you are opening
that submenu via the context menu or the File menu. And icons in
buttons and icons in menu
Err, sorry, I mis-sent that last message. This should be fixed in 9.10.
