Having upgraded my machine to Karmic, this bug got on my nerves. I
tracked it down, and it occurs because the '_get_cword' routine in
'/etc/bash_completion' is meant for bash-3, but Karmic uses bash-4.

I can confirm this. After upgrading to 9.10 the scim GTK panel icon
doesn't show up anymore. I can still use the key bindings to change
input method though.

I have updated my Ubuntu to Karmik 2 days ago.
I had nvidia drivers 96 installed WORKING in Jaunty, and now it load up
the system and show the ubuntu logo white on black, then it show a

I hit the exact same problem when performing clean 9.10 Karmic install
preserving my home directory. I had 7.04, 8.04, 8.10 and 9.04 clean
installations before with no problems. Double-clicking folders on the
desktop would open them implying there was an application registered for
folder mime type.

I too have an HP nc6400.
Before I read PeterF's post I tried to replace GRUB2 with GRUB which works
without losing (whatever utility is provided by )HP protecttools or recovery
manager.
I went into Synaptic and marked grub 2 for deletion (I WAS worried that
grub wasn't an option) but went ahea
Working on a patch now.
A simple workaround is to open the Authentication part of the dialog,
type a letter and backspace it in both the Login and Password fields.
Then connecting to a URL won't crash.
