Restarting Anki solved the problem temporarily. I can now copy from Anki
to the gnome terminal again using both Ctrl+C / Ctrl+Shift+V and mouse-

Those scripts allow You to have a fully functional Karmic sound setup without
PulseAudio.
First, execute the following in a terminal:
$ sudo apt-get purge libcanberra-pulse pulseaudio pulsea

Turns out the problem was unrelated to the upgrade -- one of the memory
modules in the laptop went bad, and it chose that boot to manifest
itself.
Pulling the problem memory allows the system to work properly again.
This is common enough that there's a FAQ for it on the HP support site.

Actually, I'm not quite sure when the "DRI" option is taken into account and
when it's not. On my computer (965GM) it is not ignored, Xorg.0.log says
(**) intel(0): Option "DRI" "off"
but glxinfo says

and yet my OpenGL screensaver (Busy Spheres) is down to about 1 fps as op
I solved my problem. I am swedish and the folder i had the image in was
"Hämtningar" witch means "Download" in english. I realised that maybe
USB-Creator do not have compatibility with utf-8 characters. And viola!
After i moved the image to my home folder it worked.
