The problem seemed linked to the Nvidia proprietary driver: if I disabled it,
things were OK. Anyway, the problem disapeared with 9.04. I have since biuilt a
new computer with an HD ATI4850 card and have had no problems whatsoever.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on a desktop machine without problems.
Though I did upgrade from 9.04 (instead of a clean install on a newly formatted
partition) and when prompted, I opted to keep my original menu.lst - when 9.10
boots it starts with a 9.04 splash screen then switch
Yes this is most frustrating. The debi installer worked fine on all
previous releases. Now it's just mush. I can't read my labels and I
can't see well anymore to begin with. What a shame Ubuntu does something
like this.

Yes, same issue on HP Compaq nx6325, which had been running grub with
WinXP SP3 and Suse 10.1 fine. Tried many of the remedies here to no
avail over hours of wasted time. So, went with Ubuntu 9.04 as the
solution.

I am having this same issue with a Kodak C180 on Ubuntu 9.10. I get the
"Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device" message when
connecting the camera. I get unable to connect to device type of errors
from both F-spot as well as Digikam.

just now i suspended the affected computer and restored it. the above was the
output for iwlist and then less than a minute later it actually listed the
surrounding ap's.
