This occurs with a Intel D915GRV and a iHOS104, so I think the issue is
with this drive. This board allows me to set the PIO and DMA mode for
this drive. Do the error codes have anything to do with those? Here is

with the latest updates installed (after i got around the mountall
issue) my system now boots into a CLI.
I did about 6 restarts, once fsck ran and that caused to to boot
normaly, all others just booted to CLI.

So, using the installer provided at the repos, the driver version 173.xx fails
too.
Before update the xserver-xorg, the nvidia-glx-173 provided package has no
problems, but after the update, it fails.

I just ran xorg-edgers' ppa-purge and tried the card again. I have
