As a work-around until this gets fixed i would suggest either having a
dual-boot with an earlier version of Ubuntu, (perhaps the 8.04 is easier
to find to download?) or to use VirtualBox (or some other virtual
machine) to install an earlier version inside your current install.

I think I can give some more light on the subject. If you are having the
same problem as me then it is an intermittent problem that affects ALL
services that are started through rc-sysinit, either all starts or none.
The reason is that rc-sysinit is started when the lo network device is
started,

I use eeepc 900 and experienced this same problem. The problem didn't
happen when I first fresh installed the 10.04, but after a few updates

Informations added, but i think i won't do the upstream-testing, because

I'm still not sure if kernel is the right package-tag for this bug.
It could be also gdm, but in the ubuntuforums a kubuntu user said he has the
same issue, so gnome would not be
