This problem is more widely spread than HP recovery software or Dell.
I have been having the same symptoms trying to install Adobe software
on a dual boot system. I am currently running Lucid with Grub2 and

Similar experience here. Upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 means that none of
my myth front-ends will work because just after boot, VGA and TV-out
both go blank - message on the VGA monitor says "input not supported".

I was under the impression, that the rt2870sta mess, preventing an USB WiFi
adapter to connect to a WPA2 protected access point, which was introduced in
Lucid, has been sorted out by now and should have been fixed in 10.04.1 Desktop

I have the same problem. The XMPP thing works for me too, but the
facebook plugin was better. Funny thing is, it used to work until a
couple days ago and then it started crashing pidgin.

Also, there is a temporary workaround:
Editing the Line "Variables" to "kate: presave-postdialog" (removing the
variable 'python-encoding') in Configure->Editor Component->Open/Save will
disable the usage of the plugin.

Missing file in kdelibs5 causes Kate/KWrite to constantly show a warning

The file "/usr/lib/kde4/ktexteditor_python-encoding.so" appears to be
missing in kdelibs5, kdelibs5-dbg or kdelibs-data.
Said File appears to be responsible for providing python-encoding functionality.

I have updated the libs too, just in case. But the logs are expectedly
