I've found it easy to reproduce the race in a kvm virtual machine using

The volume OSD doesn't change as I press - or + on my keyboard to move
the volume up and down. The volume, however, does change.
The Volume OSD seems to have two states:
1. Volume on -> OSD displays full
2. Volume off -> OSD displays off
There is nothing inbetween those two
