I went into a potentially related problem with a USB scanner. It is working

When I try to open a simple text file or say an XML file in Firefox or Text
Editor, a new item is shown in "Panel" saying "Opening xyz.xml" gets created.
The file gets opened in a normal time but that thing in panel remains there for
about a minute.
Confirmed. I've had the same problem after upgrading my xubuntu from
10.10 to 11.10 (via 11.04 naturally). Other notifications disappear as
they should, network notifications remain until manually dismissed. I
can also confirm that it's quite annoying, though maybe not extremely.

Yes, this was introduced into oneiric. The current check might very well
be too strong and err on the side of safety. You can of course still
install the "nvidia-current" package manually. But even better would be
if we would find a finer-grained condition when it's safe to offer the
nvidia driver
