The workaround suggested by Patrick Dessalle on 2011-07-07 worked for me
as well.
Inspecting the saved passwords with Seahorse, I found out that the
*account name, not the password* had been saved as "IM account password
for jabber". No wonder it could not authenticate.

I borrowed a DL N300 Wireless N adapter from a friend. Plugged it in,
Ubuntu 11.10 in my Asus UX31-DH72 recognized it and connected to my wifi
router right away. Using that, I was able to update the newly installed

After uninstalling powernap package, the issue doesn't happen any more, so looks
it is caused by powernap stopping and starting cpu frequently.
If I connects my T410 with not very good signal wifi, the problem can be
triggered very easily.
