all kind of problems. Rebooting after it seemed I was done I got massive kernel
panic, and am no longer able to boot into Ubuntu.

I don't have access to the machine for a couple of days so I can't test
it again right now, but yes, I did that three times. I would enter the
console, type the command, fail, exit the console, re-enter the console,
type command again, and it would work. I wonder if it was loading the
bootloader
Good to see it seems we have a solution, so I edited /etc/default/grub,
updating the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line to:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash i8042.ignore
and run update-grub.
Btw, on kernel parameters docs I see i8042.reset or i8042.unlock might help,
but I don't find
