read/write goes super-slow (from ~100MB/s to ~1MB/s as showed by hdparm -t

Following up on rmcd's comment: neither of my monitors is rotated, and I
still have issues with the proprietary nvidia drivers.
I am now running on the open source nouveau drivers. They have a couple
other glitches (I can watch flash videos only on the leftmost monitor!),

Xorg crashed
The "i8042.reset i8042.nomux" trick worked for me.
There used to be a bullet-proof way of reproducing the problem, and that
was to connect or disconnect the charger before booting the system. That
no longer happens, so I guess we have a solution here.

but what it seems SSD users have this problem, while HDD users don't (might
need more confirmation). So somewhere the execution of the program depends
on a timing element. When booting from hdd, the boot is so slow that this
an update to a new version can only be done via backports.
do people often need 2.32 and 2.4 at the same time? that would require renaming
the unison package to add a version and make it coinstallable

Solution: For me, the issue has been caused by an incompatible plugin
(MinimizeToTray).
Start Thunderbird in safe mode (thunderbird -safe-mode). If Thunderbird
starts up and looks normal so far, the issue is likely caused by some of
the extensions which are disabled in safe mode - the way outlined
