I confirm that clean up /var/lib/dpkg/status fixed the issue.
As I do not know right way to do so: I opened the file ans saved with
gedit:
sudo gedit /var/lib/dpkg/status
gedit warned me couple of time that I could corupt the file, but actualy
it fixed me software-properties-gtk.

Sorry - I should add that although this thread was origianlly about
Lubuntu not Xubuntu, I have been finding the problem is common on all

In my case I VNC to a remote machine where Lubuntu runs. Sometimes the file
manager runs for days without this problem, but once it starts, the problem
persists.
While writing this comment I had the idea to "killall pcmanfm" => works again!

I tested two kernel versions:
3.5.7: I got a xorg crash which threw me back to the login screen (occurred
when using mozilla thunderbird)
3.6.2: no problems (yet)
I will continue using kernel 3.6.2 for the next week.

Hmm, with gdebi-core it should actually work
Please run "sudo /usr/lib/packagekit/packagekitd --verbose" in a new terminal
and execute the installation again. Then attach the verbose output of

I was on 12.04 and had the report builder installed. I upgraded to
12.10 yesterday and am horrified to find I no longer have my Base
reports.Do I really have to spend another 2 days rebuilding my
system yet again on 12.04 just to have this?
Is there any way at all I can at least try to instal
This would indeed be nice. I'd like to keep VM host stable, i.e., on LTS
release, and yet be able to install guest VMs with newer releases easily
(same way as older releases).

A little update... while I actually got a menu to appear, it didn't seem
to actually do anything. For example, going to Data -> Sort (in Calc),
didn't open the sorting dialogue.
This seems like a pretty grave bug. In the meantime, libreoffice-gtk
needs to be removed for LibreOffice to be actually

When I run Synaptic from the Unity launcher, it doesn't start with super
user privileges, when running from the dash it works fine, I think the
desktop file needs the command "gksu synaptic" or something like it, not
only "synaptic".
