Xserver-xorg-video-intel is definitly the troublemaker for me.
In discrete mode i can do whatever I want and even install the latet version of
xserver-xorg-video-intel.
Switching to high performance graphics kills the install (message about only
low graphics mode available).

I updated the title again, the "won't run" part of the bug description
is the symptom if you hit this bug, but that only happens when you
either install gnome-sudoku on a lean install that doesn't include the
recommends: packages of ubuntu-desktop, or if you strip stuff out of a
desktop install.
For the record, if you just unselect the bcmwl driver, ubuntu will use
b43. It's exactly similar to unselecting nvidia (then it will use
nouveau) or unselecting fglrx (then it will use ati).
