I downloaded the Kubuntu 18.04-beta1 iso and did an install in
VirtualBox 5.0.40_Ubuntu r115130. During the install the screen was too
small to show the Next button. Resizing the virtualbox window had no
effect.

After a recent install of the 18.04 (why is a separate story), I notice
that after some number of successful screen locks, I become locked out
of the desktop with an authentication failure. During those
unsuccessful attempts to log in, syslog shows:

That may be true as you say but there is just one problem with that. I

to reinstall 16.04 and it also crashed during installation of Files. in
both instances
I was able to go online download stuff but only while the disk was in the
drive.

stressor was performing FREEZE/THAW ioctls and this was blocking the
stressor. I've currently disabled this stress test as I believe its is
a broken test; we sometimes get a race on freezing/thawing with a
