qemu-system-x86 broken when running kernel 4.15.0-34-generic as well -
same result (black screen displays and qemu-system-x86 runs at 100% cpu
indefinitely).
Totally black screen immediately - no bios flashes.

going on with your system. Here are some suggestions:
Check all updates are installed? Try proposed updates?
Is this with mouse or trackpad?
Have you checked what gsettings is reporting?

That wold also be my guess. Some things you can try that might help:
disable hardware acceleration in the preference and change the video
output. Maybe there is a combination that works better with your
hardware.

I notice that bug #1773457 has been marked as a duplicate of this one.
It is a duplicate, but with one important difference: /boot should also
be encrypted.
As per comment #5 by @spm2011, I repeat the key points here for
convenience:
• There is a bug with Grub that prevents wide scale adoption
I went back to 16.04.5 LTS for one of the laptops (kernel 4.15). I was
surprised to get the same disappointing results as with 18.04.1 LTS.
Exactly the same scripts yield a satisfactory performance with an older
version of 16.04 LTS (kernel 4.4)!
