I went back to 16.04.5 LTS for one of the laptops (kernel 4.15). I was surprised to get the same disappointing results as with 18.04.1 LTS. Exactly the same scripts yield a satisfactory performance with an older version of 16.04 LTS (kernel 4.4)!
