Resolved by switching to lightdm and booting into Cinnamon Desktop instead of
Gnome. Mate works as well.
I finally managed to work my way through the text based apport-collect
and was able to send the data.

First my system became incredibly slow (consistent with the memory leak
in Caja). I xKill Caja and then tried to restart it. I then closed every
app and tried to do a shutdown. I got a warning that Caja still had
processes running preventing shutdown. I chose shut down
I discovered that the issue seems to not actually be the lock screen.
Last night the screen timed out but did not lock as the lock is set to happen
at 30 minutes but the blank screen at 10 min.
The screen blanked and the issue occurred. I came back to the laptop some time
later and found that

Yes, but this does not grant transparent access to the Documents folders

This (keyboard shortcuts not working) happened to me, specifically
CTRL+ALT+T not giving me the terminal. I experimented and found that the
ALT key was at fault - it wasn't registering. I then found a reference
on line (sorry don't have the URL) to this being a keyboard Language
issue. I then
