The Weston try out is irrelevant. In Weston Conky refuses to start and
gives an error message about the display and it does it all the time. I
use transparency and for that, conky requires a compositor, see the

Well I would say https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1424201 isn’t properly
solved until VAAPI is on by default for browsers on Ubuntu. Neither
Firefox or Chromium do so yet. There’s a few bugs on the browser side
that need the be solved, as mentioned in the Arch Wiki.

Which is different in our case that for normal people is that the use of
Kerberos requires to set in firefox the preference
"network.negotiate-auth.trusted-uris" which by default is not set.

yields a "soft lockup" on all CPU cores, and then a "hard lockup" on
almost all CPU cores until there's only one still left alive, which I'm
guessing is when it crashes (i.e, that one last-remaining core locks
up). Is there any way I can test this?

Today my brand new Ubuntu 21.10 Impish has forced the change of Firefox as
Snap, so I'm suffering Kerberos not working from inside the Firefox snap.

After a recent re-installation of 'impish' in late July (for reasons not
relevant here) using the same hardware and ISO image, and many reboots
later I haven't seen this delay before shutting down or rebooting at
