no SATA drive recognition with A8V-MX

Problem present with Ubuntu 7.10 Tribe 3 and still on Ubuntu 7.10 RC as
of download on 12/10/2007.
During install sequence, no disk is found for partitioning. Irrespective
of other bug reports, this still remains, and no useful solution to
fixing it.
Am running Ubuntu 7.04
same/similar problem - I cannot get any feedback from the system to give
any details. I have an ATI 9660 on Asus A8V-MX with AMD64.
I have been able to install i386 Ubuntu with some problems, but AMD64
install gives a blank screen and no output/action from CTRL-
ALT-F1/F2/F3/F4/F5/F6/F7/F8/F9.
