I have now tried Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat 10.10 and the boot-up goes flawlessly.
There's no problem with the boot-up whatsoever despite manipulation of the
grub(2).
After the upgrade one should be careful to watch for changes in one's
grub settings and keep control over these.

init read head process terminated (5).
This line gets increased to 4 lines when I've added the splashimage (*.tpa),
but as
noted, the duplicate listing disappears when the splashimage is added in one
way or another.

Somehow, the extra lines under the init...[some]... 5 are now gone! Only this
line remains.
This also applies to Lucid Lynx 10.04 and I'm not sure if this phenomenon
appears in f.x. Maverick Meerkat 10.10 or the-soon-to-come Natty Narwhal 11.04.
