I have tested this out as well, I definately get the same results, so I
am setting this bug as confirmedtriagers and others with access to
status, feel free to modify if needed.

My ricoh 5-in-1 memory card reader has not been working for quite some
time now, I stick a memory stick in the slot, any slot and ubuntu fails
to read/see itI believe this has been happening since Dapper, I
noticed in Hardy over and over after MANY updates..lspci sees

you must be connected to the internet to use your pc? how would this be
so? I think the network connections come on AFTER the initial boot up
process.

A recent update to firefox seems to have fixed the issue at hand, though
it happened with and without compiz enabled. I dont experience it with
any other applications, just firefox.
