Looks like you have run into the infamous CPU frequency issue.
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_CPU_frequency_scaling
Solution is to make sure you are running with high quality AC power.
Workaround is to edit /etc/default/grub
Find the following line and add processor.ignore_ppc=1

Public bug reported:
After a random period of time after a fresh boot, the system cache gets
corrupted. This is shown by hdparm -T.
Before system cache corruption:
Timing cached reads: 1804 MB in 2.00 seconds = 902.88 MB/sec
After system cache corruption:
Timing cached reads: 258 MB in 2
I use pinta on Ubuntu Linux and the same problem exists. I notice that
it not just EXIF data, but all metadata stored in the photo.
I tested with a Sample image containing a large amount of metadata:
EXIF, IPTC and XMP. In my case I simply used Pinta to rotate the photo
90 degrees and then re-save
** Attachment added: "Sample image after rotation with deleted metadata"

** Summary changed:
- Pinta eats-up EXIF data after saving JPEG file
+ Pinta eats-up all metadata after saving JPEG file
Cool, I look forward to seeing full support of XMP-dwc in 14.04.
In the meantime, I'll do some testing with Flickr & Picasa, to see if
XMP-dwc data is preserved and searchable. And look into auto-tagging
Shotwell.

A couple of questions.
Does this still happen with the non-beta version of Ubuntu?
If so, can you connect manually, via the wifi icon on the top bar?

I had similar issues. In my case it was due to my battery being dead and
being connected to a low quality AC power source.
Your CPU is stuck at 1.20 GHz, but should go up to 2.10 GHz :
current policy: frequency should be within 1.20 GHz and 1.20 GHz.
