This behaviour is still present with kernel 4.2.0-7-generic - when an
external display is connected the desktop becomes incorrect
tiled/scaled, and the displays rapidly (~10 Hz) flicker.
Having the external display (Apple Cinema 27) plugged in during boot is
no longer a reliable workaround.
Two more data points:
1. The mini-dp monitor works correctly if it's plugged in at boot time. It
continues to work after suspend/resume and disconnect/reconnect.
2. I tried booting

I've just upgraded to this kernel, and I don't believe it's fixed the

The ptoblem is actually with the tab control of GTK, so it shows up in
Gedit, Pidgin, Nautilus and several others. Firefox doesn't exhibit it,
I believe because they don't contain controls in the tab panels, but
merely use the tabs as a signal to switch by other means.

I have the same symptoms on a Dell M1330 with a 1280x800 screen and an
Nvidia 8400GM using proprietary drivers . I set the resolution once
logged in, the screen's native.
When gdm/X starts I see a cropped Nvidia logo, as though zoomed in, then
a large login box and mouse pointer aslo as if zoomed

The upgrade in feisty to mesa 6.5.2 and libdrm 2.3.0 has fully fixed
this bug. The visual 0x5a message remains, but isn't relevant.

Since Feisty updated to X.Org 7.2, mesa 6.5.2 my 965g has worked for
X, GL, Compiz Beryl. It appears that the people commenting on and
following this bug are using Feisty.
Is anyone still having problems, or is this bug OK to close?

Following update to latest Feisty kernel (2.6.20-8) my root partition
fails to mount during boot. Kernel 2.6.20-6 works, noacpi does not help.
Root is an ext3 partition on sda2. SATA harddrive is plugged into port 1
of i965 controller
