In fact the problem disappeared on my M1210 some time ago after
upgrading to feisty. And I have not yet encountered this problem on

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112799
Public bug reported:
This problem happens with the vmware-server package from the commercial
repository on feisty (Kubuntu 7.04).
When installing the vmware-server package it will remove xinetd and
replace it with netkit-inetd. I am no security specialist but I think
xinetd should be used and
The same happens to me: (Ubuntu Edgy, KDE 3.5, Dell XPS M1210, X86_64)
but it happens out of the blue. I am not using a headset or any other
special audio device.

If I use the acpi=noirq kernel parameter I can adjust the brightness without
any problems but closing the lid the screen still remains black and the
computer freezes.
Another sideeffect of this workaround is that because of the kernel parameter

Bad news, after running for a day without any problems it started

I fetched the latest i810 driver from the x.org git repository, compiled and
installed it.
Now I am testing that version. So far I have not experienced any crashed nor
any keyboard or mouse failures. So this version looks good (64bit), but I am
still testing it.
