because it is written as a special VM in assembly language.

OK, forget it!
It doesn't make sense to take the current version from Debian, because
the 64-bit version of PicoLisp doesn't run properly on Ubuntu. It
crashes in some calls to C libraries (e.g. dlopen()).
This seems to be because the Ubuntu libraries assume a stack alignment
to a multiple of 16
Where is the problem? Is it such a big task to take the latest version
over from Debian Wheezy? If so, can I possibly help?
Also, can we avoid introducing new bugs as it happened in Oneiric?

As 3.0.9.7 is available meanwhile in Debian 'sid', I suggest to wait
another 10 days until it is in 'wheezy', and then take that one, as it
contains further fixes and improvements.

On Ubuntu 11.10 (server), a source file like

because /usr/include/stdio.h tries to include bits/predefs.h which
doesn't exist.

"-Wl,--no-as-needed" in the 'gcc' link line. This should fix the problem
