Title:
Sound problems
There is nothing wrong with Simple Scan nor kernel 4.15.0-55. Scanning is now
fine. The fault was with my scanner and has been resolved.
I apologise for being too quick to press the panic button.
Cheers,
Andre

Following a number of experiments with pps and ppt files, I have found
the following:

OpenOffice.org 3.2.0
After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 with kernel 2.6.35-22 ALL sound was
racing and fragmented. A bug was lodged and Daniel Chen advised to
download the nightly snapshot of the alsa-driver relevant to that
kernel.
I am having the same problem since upgrade to 10.10. Sound was broken after
the upgrade but has since been fixed by installation of the kernel-specific
alsa-driver update.
@Tony
Rename the extension from pps to ppt. That will make it editable.

Hello,
All this time I have been using a wrapper script pointing to Timidity
for Firefox to play a midi file.
Your letter prompted me to re-visit this issue and I discovered that if
Totem is specified as the preferred application to play midi files in
Firefox, then YES, it works and more
I have been involved in three questions on this same matter - that in a
dual boot configuration Windows XP loses its internet connection when
Jaunty is installed.
See questions: 71481, 72202 and 72670
The resolution seems to be the installation of an updated driver in XP.

Yes, John, if I set the preferences in Firefox to open midi with
timidity, the midi file is played.
The problem is that playing a midi file in Firefox does not
automatically open the timidity GUI and can therefore not be turned off.
The only way that I can turn it off is to use the System Monitor
This bug is not fixed.
It has been circumvented by means of a workaround on my personal
computer as detailed above (2009-01-07).
Activating a midi file in Firefox 3.0.8 still does not display the
Timidity GUI so that the file can be terminated.
To test, access http://www.trachtman.org/ragtime/
Indeed the problem persists. Now even Galeon will not play a midi.
Firefox in Dapper Drake was tamed by the creation of a little wrapper
script, an alteration in about:config to not hide downloads without an
extension and a change to the specified action when faced by a midi
file. It worked.
