There must be something dodgy about mounting the DVD drive in LinuxMint 10 as
well, both the Ubuntu version and the Debian version. Here's my story:
I downloaded and burned the Debian ISO successfully using K3b. Then, to be on
the safe side, I burned three DVDs for backup, also using K3b,

Initial situation: Computer and monitor turned off (grid power removed).
1. Connect the power grid to computer and monitor

It appears as if installing a media player, such as VLC, worsens the
situation. I have been running 9.04 daily now for quite a while, and the
problem appeared once. After installation of VLC, the problem appears a
lot more frequently. Coincidence???

There is a possibility that Ubuntu, when installing and preserving /home in a
separate partition, doesn't write the necessary files for recognizing an
already plugged-in modem. I have installed Xubuntu twice - once in a separate

Yes, it appears to be hardware-specific. I have two computers - one Network
(Swedish made) and one Packard Bell, both desktop machines. The Packard Bell
machine recognises the modem even if plugged-in before boot, the Network one
doesn't.
I used to run Mandriva (2009.1) on both machines. The
I can confirm the problem. It appears that the modem has to be
disconnected physically and then connected again for the USB-thingies to
realise that something has been connected. After that, it connects to
