mouse pointer (of my Acer's AS3810T Synaptics touchpad) freezes every time I do
the following things:
1) select Switch from user... (in GNOME fallback session, from the session
menu);
2) at the LightDM screen I log in another user (e. g. Guest);
mouse cursor works in that another user session,
In my case, touchpad hangup occurs in Precise more often than in Oneiric, Natty
etc.
Interestingly, it unfreezes after suspend resume.

If it's Oneiric (11.10), I know only a radical workaround:
cp ~/.config/dconf/user ~/.config/dconf/user.bak
rm ~/.config/dconf/user
log out, and then you'll need to fully reconfigure the settings of your GNOME
desktop.

window, the new window doesn't have a tab handle, but only a + tab button:
