The deb worked for me as well. Thank you David for the fix. Also this
issue should effect the following models according to the bottom of my
laptop and acer's info:

I believe it has something to do with the way the card is detected. I've
been trying to get this working for a while now. The only thing i've
found is switching to the 2.6.32 kernel solves it in any distro. In arch
I tried downgrading alsa to 1.0.22 and still no sound but it works fine
with 2.6.32
I can confirm this bug still exists in 10.10 with my acer aspire 7736z
which has the same video card. I tried the first workaround passing
arguments to the kernel through grub which fixes the issue.

I just tried linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) from ppa with lucid
problem still persists with all recent updates. Digital output is
showing under aplay -l but you can get any output switching in sound
preferences to any of the digital outputs.

It appears to me to be a problem with the PIIX4 chipset i.e. 82371AB (IDE
controller ) and Edgy's hardware detection. It will see the IDE controller as
a scsi device
