Following output log may be the reason for this bug. After running gnome-art
from terminal and ask for example for: art > Other Themes > Spash Screen
I get this type of errors for all the downloaded files:
PixbufError with File:
/home/cedric/.gnome2/gnome-art/thumbnails/Splash-Urban-Th.png - del
Well Kevin, for me just disabling the system sounds does the work, no need to
disable ESD.
I am not sure if the library I mentioned I installed is also needed for the
partial workaround. Because I don't think disabling system sounds could be
called a solution.

Frozen Bubb
I could get sound from application running from menu item after installing
package libsdl1.2debian-all
$ sudo apt-get install libsdl1.2debian-all
However the music breaks a little bit. So still better to run game from
terminal. If someone found a definite solution please update.

Tried to run frozen bubble from menu item setting as type "application in
terminal", and I got the following error message:
[SDL Init] ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:874:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

Same issue here with ubuntu 8.04 and frozen bubble. I can start the game
with sound from a terminal, but no luck yet from menu item.
Dick, I haven't installed Alien Arena so I don't know the exact name of
the command. You can check for such this way: right click on
applications > edit menus > game

After installing the esound package you need to reboot your machine to
let the system sound start working.

I resolved same issue after installing esound:
sudo apt-get install esound
