the workaround i've been using is (yes, it's ridiculous): click the
fullscreen button and then move the mouse pointer over the desktop
before the fullscreen window appears. in this way, the fullscreen window
will not be instantly destroyed.

i had a chance to visit the machine in person today, and the fix in
-ubuntu4 worked for me after i had rebooted the machine. it seems that
something besides vino-server must be restarted for the fix to take
effect.

the remote cursor is hideously slow, and on top of that it's not even
the right remote cursor (for whatever reason it's white instead of my
chosen DMZ Black).
i don't care about the remote cursor, but hiding the local cursor is
extremely user-hostile and makes me about 1/4 as productive when i am
the new package from intrepid-proposed resolved this problem for me.

Yes, that's true. I should have noted that. The option won't take effect
without an X restart.

There is a workaround noted on a duplicate bug, but I don't see it here
so I'll post it for the benefit of those that happen upon this bug.
The workaround is to disable the "Hide original mouse pointer" option in
the Enhanced Desktop Zoom plugin. You can do this either using ccsm, or
by setting

with mplayer installed and --mplayer 1 added to the .desktop file, the
sheep do not display at all.
I am able to reproduce the bug on a fully-updated 8.04 beta,
