in earlier versions of kubuntu this wasn't the default backend.
Now so that we can get closer to finding the bug please run:

KPackageKit is only an interface to packagek
I think I also tryied with my libc update, but I'll check again.
BTW can you test search for "ho" and see if it also happens.
Another important test would be to run packagekitd --verbose

KPackageKit is actually able to use apt-cacher BUT the config _must_ go
into kde proxy settings or /etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf.
Not the best solution for sure, but I have fixed this issue now it just
need a new PackageKit package.

Sebastian that's not a good test in my opnion, refreshing caches does
not download large files which might eat all bandwidth, not counting if
the cache didn't change it won't download the files again, and it does
not download files in parallel like when downloading packages.

First it is important to note that resolving deps is not KPackageKit task, it
is the backend's.
aptcc (default in Maverick), does what apt-get does when a dep problem happens,
it shows to the user why that happened. The user just need to read and take the
proper action.
Aptitude and Synaptic are
Right now it would be possible to check for missing language packages before
any install/update.
But this would be a MUST, in other words the user would not be able to skip
downloading them, which
might upset some users since lang packs are pretty big.

Right that's because Synaptic was made only for apt/rpm, it opens (and
lock) your db and all changes that you do are resolved "instantly", but
this blocks automatic updates to take place it can be used by only one
user at time, and if it doesn't it could show you not updated values.
