Often in aisleriot the image of one particular card ( e.g. the 10 of
spades ) is corrupted, ie the card is displayed but with extra stuff
drawn on top. This happens for all instances of that particular card in
a game. The image corruption is the same in each of these cards.
This bug still occurs in gnome-mahjongg version 3.22.0.
Tried on Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS ( year 2020 ) using standard Ubuntu package.
The bug: One cannot change the board layout because the Mahjongg

The update to xserver-xorg-core 2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.8 doesnt seem to fix

Did an update. Checked that I had xserver-xorg-core 2:1.18.4-0ubuntu0.8

and coming up with a way to revert the problem.
I downloaded the .deb files linked to from Bug #1780664.

I re-installed the linux-image-2.6.32-33-generic package and
re-ran grub-install.
Now kernel 2.6.32-33 is working and boots fine from grub.
So probably this is not a bug as reported, although something funny
