Unfortunately I cannot upgrade the bios of this machine due to lack of
physical access to it. However I doubt that the bios (updated or not)
should cause such a slow down. Also note that this happens on a
different machine as well for which I'm going to add the bios

While I was watching the C compilation going on on my 8 cores, I noticed
the following differences n the CPU usage reported by top. In kernel
3.16 all gcc instances (actually cc1) are using 25%, but with 3.13 they
are all between 97 or 99%.
Looks like a scheduler bug of some sort.

$ sudo rmmod e1000e
$ sudo modprobe e1000e
and you get back the original perf
I've upgraded to an even more recent version of the BIOS (version F.18)
in which HP stated having fixed a suspend issue for Fedora and found out
that it also solves that issue too without having to suspend or disable
the ricoh_mmc driver. I believe that the issue can now be closed if it

For the BIOS upgrade, you can get the FreeDOS bios update and stick it
on a USB key. From the key it will do the upgrade without the need for
Windows.
