I have got my issue solved. It had nothing to do with Firefox or Ubuntu
updates or anything like that. Neither was it google search bar. It was
the add-on that I had for the browser. "Show IP", was the one bugging
the browser.
Strangely I have been using this add-on for some time now and it worked
I am having similar issues as well. Synaptic shows updates but when I
say insatll it asks for the password, builds & reads the package
information and gives me back the same screen where I asked it to
install updates.
There is no change in the updates neither does it install any.

I am also having the same problem since I had upgraded to the latest
Firefox release. It is not related to any specific URL or a type of web
page. It occurs even if I have just Firefox running and no other
application.
I am on a 32 bit architecture with 2.6.24-21-generic kernel and running
Ubuntu
